Wooden Corner is a compact first-floor extension to an end of terrace house overlooking Fairview Green in Marino, Dublin. The project transforms an overlooked triangular space along the side of the existing dwelling into valuable new accommodation for a growing family.
The design emerged from a simple challenge: how to increase floor area without compromising daylight to the existing ground-floor living spaces. Rather than extending above the rear addition, the new volume occupies a residual corner of the site, turning a difficult and underutilised space into an architectural opportunity.
The extension accommodates a new principal bedroom with ensuite together with a flexible room that can serve as a home office or additional bedroom. Its distinctive geometry is expressed through Siberian larch cladding, softened corners and deeply recessed openings that provide privacy while creating depth and shadow.
By reimagining a fragment of land often considered unusable, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can unlock the hidden potential of suburban sites and create adaptable spaces for contemporary family life.
“We engaged Mariano’s services for adding a first floor extension to our end-of-terrace house in Marino, from initial design right through to completion. He listened to our requirements and helped us make some key decisions about the layout and design. He took on board our feedback on early iterations of the design and came up with an optimal design that met our main requirements of adding an extra room that would function as a home office and a guest room. His knowledge of the local planning approach in Marino helped to make sure we got planning on the first go. He was always helpful, and available to meet if we wanted to discuss aspects of the project. He worked closely with the builder and advocated for us when challenges arose on that side. He was great in helping us select finishes, flooring, paint colours etc, and assisted with a renovation of the existing kitchen/dining/living area, which we added to the scope of the project along the way. Overall, we’d recommend BAMA’s services.”
