Pergine’s Competition

Renewal of Piazza Roma in Berbenno, Valtellina

This competition proposal for the renewal of Piazza Roma in Berbenno, Valtellina, transforms the area around the church into a clear, welcoming and flexible civic space. The design strengthens the square’s role as a place for everyday life, community events and local markets, while carefully respecting the historic presence of the church and the surrounding village fabric.

Vehicle access and parking are reorganised below ground, freeing the surface for pedestrians, greenery and social activity. A restrained palette of natural stone paving, timber seating and contemporary lighting creates a calm, durable public setting. Planting, water features and carefully framed views introduce comfort and seasonal character, while a sequence of level changes and accessible routes connects the square to its adjoining streets.

A distinctive feature of the proposal is its adaptable street furniture: simple elements can evolve from benches into covered market stalls, allowing Piazza Roma to respond easily to different uses. The project combines functional infrastructure with a renewed sense of identity, turning the square into a lively and recognisable heart for Berbenno.
